Searches for environmentally friendly cars.  Taking a green line to cars, the Guardian lists The top 10 green cars.  In my opinion, the most notable from a green standpoint (not listed in order of price) were:

• Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTI 16V Life (efficient diesel, under £10K new)
• Daihatsu Charade 1.0 EL (small petrol, under £7K new)
• Smart Pure Fortwo Coupe (small town car, about £7K new)

Car clubs avoid the hassle of having to spend 20 minutes showing your license when hiring a car and having it checked when you return it.  However, it isn't that cheap and you still need to book and pick-up the car when you hire it.  So, if there isn't a car in your locality, you will probably be better off from a regular car-hire company.
