Google searching

More insights into Google from ZDNet, who "sneaked into" the Imperial College lecture theatre where Urs Hölzle was talking about
How Google does things (the original advert for the lecture).

Meanwhile, Google UK is doing some hardcore Recruiting - 23 UK-based vacancies at last count. They are spending their IPO money on something, then.

"Heavy wait" journo's around the world struggle with spelling?

Added a page on power tools, Alexa shows data for smaller sites

Created a price comparison page for power tools, and fixed links on other pages.

Alexa has updated their traffic details pages so that smaller sites can see their data (if they click on the 2 year graph). Not sure that it is deliberate, but it works for me.

I've been very easily converted onto Picasa, photo viewing utility.  I found it when looking at iPhoto for the Mac, and wondered whether there was an equivalent for the PC.  I had been bugged by the poor preview capabilities of Explorer under Windows 98.  This seems a lot better and can export to a web page, which might be useful for creating quick web versions of large images.  Picasa was recently bought by Google.

NTK sticks all dohs elsewhere [dohthehumanity.com]

NTK is now sticking its dohs on Doh the humanity, a site for website mistakes and silly juxtapositions. When will NTK steal their dohs back?

For those that dream of living in a lighthouse, this could be for you. A travel article on where to book a holiday in a lighthouse keeper's cottage. You will see the sea.

If you are wanting to haggle with Simply Travel, try Iglu Villas who seem to do slightly lower-priced deals for the same villas and cottages.

Rejigged Navigation

I have altered the navigation on a number of pages, though it's possibly not up to Jacob Nielsen's standards. If you are having difficulty finding a page, please use the site map.

New pages on Return of the King, Doom 3 and Contact Lenses (in no particular order)

I have added a number of pages to the site. They cover criticism of the third Lord of the Rings film, Return of the King (I don't like some of the changes made for the film). Doom 3 - what are the best ways to upgrade your hardware for this game (links to a number of sources). And a page with my advice on buying Contact Lenses.

Their coverage features a five-part history of the game's publisher, TSR. An interview with Gary Gygax and reviews of many of the computer games that the role-playing game inspired, including Baldur's Gate and the SSI gold box series. A fine "Whatever happened to?". All they need is a quick article on the cartoon to finish the coverage off.

Gamespy have an interesting Special Features index which includes the Dungeons and Dragons article, as well as Game of the Year awards 2003 and an article on the Top 25 Most Underrated Games of all Time. Gamespot have their own Special Features page, including links to their Game Guides and Top Tens.

I have put together some advice on where to find cheap mobile phone deals in the UK. Some websites are offering more than 100 cross-network anytime minutes a month for less than £80.

Google's hardware reaching mammoth proportions

Apparently Google's hardware has scaled to 100,000 machines claims this article, which also speculates a little on how it might be used. I'm sure Google's potential acquisition targets think long and hard about how having that much processing power (or even a small fraction of that) might improve their web service.

Philip Greenspun is theorising that Google is planning to bring a web-office application (a MS Office competitor) to the masses.

Personally, I think that they are growing their Search and Adsense-serving capabilities. When will Adsense become the de-facto internet ad?

On the other hand, their price comparison search (Froogle) appears poor, their search itself now being caught by other search engines (Yahoo!) and users may ask themselves why switch mail if Yahoo/Hotmail offer similar capacities? Has their growth become that of a mature company?

Google is filing for an IPO

Their SEC filing says:
"MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE
We aspire to make Google an institution that makes the world a better place. With our products, Google connects people and information all around the world for free. "
(see also the parent document)

The Register's take includes some artistic licence:
"We'd like to build the world a home," write co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. "And furnish it with love. Grow apple trees and honey bees, and snow-white turtle doves."
