Had exactly the same thing. Virgin (utter garbage) said it was a BT fault. Then it wasn't, then it was again. Went through all settings, re-registered over the phone. Nothing.
Speedtouch modem as well.
So disgusted with the arseing around I've cancelled.

How interesting, so it seems to be that I am not the only one. I have signed a new Broadband contract with Bulldog Broadband 8 Meg in London, I have installed the software from Bulldog / Thomson Speedtouch Modem 330. Since than I have constantly 0734 error, PPP connection disconnected, 0r 0690 password or username wrong, or 0680 no dial tone. I complained again and again, but with my last mail to the customer support team of Bulldog is the outcome nothing, I am ignored. As well, I was advised to disable all my gurads, firewalls to let Bulldog through, by this I got an infection on my PC, so that I lost the whole machine. Any more of you having the same problem, even with Bulldog?????

got same trouble with Bulldog + SpeedTouch330 here.
I keep getting disconnecting every now and then; then it would not verify the password on the first attempt as I log back in.
And I am not even talking about the so-called 8Mbps ... more like 1.6Mbps!! even after "optimizing" to >4Mbps etc....
Maybe I am missing something...

Not to mention how painful it was to get it all up and running.
An engineer was sent over in order to 'test' the line before I could set anything up. He stayed 10 minutes, just so that he could drink a cuppa. He did nothing else. Nothing.
So off he went, and here I was pulling me hair out.
I rang them up telling them that I was having problems getting online.
I have had a BT connection until now and everything had just gone smooth with them, so I figured it should be no different with any other ISP. Yeah right! Long story short, I had to stick a filter for each Sky box (3 in all) as they interfere with the line, when they never did with BT.... . Oh and I had to guess that!

Hi Got same problem as everyone else, speedtouch modem and ppp disconnecting after one or two mins, or when I try to visit a site ( oddly enough I can get onto google to search, but soon as I click link it drops out )

How has anyone else resolved this?

Hello.  I got this problem using Toucansurf on my XP computer - 'Error 678 & PPP disconnected'.  Cannot solve.  BUT, when I tried to instal it on my old 98SE computer (wouldn't even pass BT's broadband test !), it set itself up & connected immediatelly. So looks like I'll have to stick with this. If anyone solves the problem when running XP, please let me know.      Ted Griffin.

We are having a very big problem with a slight disconnection at exactly midnight every night. This has happened since I set up a wireless network at Christmas last year. We have contacted AOL several times on this matter but nothing has been done. But we have done / altered / re-installed many things but its still not working.

The weird thing is its only the AOL program that shuts off. Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger etc stay on. Once AOL says its been disconnected and cannot find a connection, you can then connect back on straight away

Error 0734 on Bulldog bb 2mb connection and invalid password errors.

Above are the problems that i like several others here are also suffering.

Once  the line has dropped i try to restart and get username or pass unknown error command i have to re enter correct password in order to reconnect.

I have currently  disconnected my sky telephone cable and fingers crossed it has not dropped for 10 mins although why i should have to do this is beyond me as it has worked relatively error free for 12mnths

Hi everybody, I used to own a speed touch 330 modem and had no end of problems. After my research I found that it is the modem that is dropping the connection and not you’re ISP/BT. the answer to this is because most USB ports on machines can’t keep up with the voltage demand of the modem. my advice to you is to go out and buy yourself a powered modem which will connect through Ethernet (if you haven't got an Ethernet port then you will need to buy an Ethernet card as well. they are about £7) as I brought one of these after my troubles and haven’t had one problem.

Hope this all helps and that some of you can now browse the net error free.

It's only a slim chance, but .... I had the same problem only to discover that my password to my BT Broadband account had dissapeared from my router. When I re-entered it the problem went away !

Hi everyone
I was relieved to see that I am not along in suffering problems with my SpeedTouch 330 modem. I have been with Virgin on Broadband for about a year. Some months ago I found that it could take as long as 2 or 3 hours to get on line. I started to leave the computer on full time which I had not been doing, but from time to time I was still disconnected. In frustration I am in the process of moving to AOL and they are going to supply a new modem. But I gather that it will be 330 so I anticipate the same problems.
As for the Virgin 'help' line, well that is a joke and as you have to use an 087 number it can be an expensive one at that.
Any advice would be greatfully received.

Hi,

I've recently purchased a Thompson Speedtouch 330 and i'm getting the same problem "PPP connection disconnected".  However, when I tried someone else's Speedtouch 330, and it worked!  So then I thought it must have been a faulty modem, but I tried it on another computer and it works fine.  So we have swapped modems but this still doesn't explain what the problem is.

My advice, ditch the Speedtouch modem and buy a decent one. Following my previous entry into this discusion I got advice from a commercial IT technician. The first question he asked when I described my problem of not being able to connect was, 'throw the Speedtouch in the bin, I hate those things, they're rubbish!'
I took his advice and bought a D-Link Router (this is not an ad. honest) Immediately my problems were solved. This is despite the hours spent on the Virgin so called 'help' line (that is a joke) being told that the problem had nothing to do with the modem.
I had to pay £80 but that included installation costs as I didn't feel confident in setting it up myself. You can of course buy them much cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Had the same prob with stouch330 and bulldog for the past 2 months.
I reinstalled the modem and in the process of doing so, i lost my password to connect. So i phoned bulldog to retrieve it and mentioned the problem.
They advised me to log when the connection drops for a period of 2 hours, phone them back up and report it to them. It must be some kind of traffic problem seeing as it appears to discon randomly.
Anyway, it's been on for over 24 hrs and not dropped so they must've done something about it.

i imagine it to be something to do with priorities with the other 49 peeps on my pipe.

Discraceful problem anyway.. they've probably bit off too many customers than they can chew!

I've just changed to TalkTalk 8mbps broadband from Demon 2mbps and encountered this new problem (modem worked fine for a year). The connection works fine for 20mins before dropping.

I understand from speaking to tech support that it is the modem at fault. He recommended installing the new high speed drivers from the speedtouch website but this has not helped. I'm going to try the steps outlined here:
http://www.speedtouch.co.uk/330highspeed.asp

I'm not particularly optimistic though as it seems to be a hardware problem. Might just buy a new modem.

Ditch the Speedtouch! Had a nightmare with mine. Bought a Netgear and solved the problems. I am not advertising Netgear by the way, just pleased to have my broadband running without any random disconnection issues. The Tiscali sales team told me that the Speedtouch provided worked with OSX, how wrong they were. After emailing them to ask for technical help, and getting untold replys asking me to check my filters etc, I undertook the task of troubleshooting the problem myself. It turns out that the Speedtouch is a load of rubbish, my connection speed has risen by a whole meg since getting shot of it, no random connection dropouts and broadband all the time. How they can supply such inferior equipment, I don't know. Good luck, burn the Speedtouch!!

I'm having problems with my SpeedTouch 330 modem too, i consistently get error 680, no dial tone.

i need to get 3 pc's on my network, so is a pci-card good for this purpose? i read about ethernet modems, but they appear to only be good for connecting one pc.

i dont trust usb modems after this, so is a pci modem ideal for someone with my requirements?

any help appreciated

You should get yourself a modem/ router. There are many available, your choice. I am running 3 ethernet devices into mine, and don't have any problems at all. A router which runs off its own power source is a must, whereas, a modem/ router that requires the computer to generate the power is not. When you switch the computer supplying the power off, you lose the connection. None of the other pcs will be able to connect unless the main one is on. I can switch my G5 off and still use the laptop or XBOX on the net. Ethernet provides fast file sharing over your home network, much quicker than USB devices, which really should be avoided. The Speedtouch is a cheap and easily available product, I have seen them on ebay for a couple of pounds, in fact, I have two which I don't have the heart to sell to an unsuspecting customer, have binned them!! I am using a Netgear 4 port Ethernet modem/ router which also acts a my server to any connected devices, for 40 pounds you can't better. I hope this helps.

thing is that even on my router (Dlink 524T) I have the same problems. After about 20 minutes my router is frozen (adsl light is off) and I have to switch off and switch on to re-establish connection. When I was creating connection I used wizard option choosing bulldog predefinied settings. Can U help me with taht issue. How to avoid disconnection with router?

Hi wondered if you could help. Had speedtouch (using it now) with orange. Updated to Livebox and have similar prob. Spent time and money on useless call centre. Have the PPP server down message. Would getting a new router be a solution?

Hi there,

Found this thread after searching for help on the ppp connection....

I reall hope Im not repeating common knowledge here....but...

I recently ordered the new "non-cable broadband" service from Virgin Media and was sent a text message saying my service had now been connected yesterday.

I also received an email telling me how to log in to my broadband. (is it just me who loves the irony of that? sending you an email with the instructions???!?!)

Anyway, the email gave my username and password to log in, however when I entered these into the "speedtouch connection" it failed to connect.

after numerous phonecalls to Virgin this morning (one guy did not have a clue what "non cable broadband" was or what a "speedtouch modem" was either despite saying he had been there for over 4 years................ muppet..) I finally was on the brink of giving up, until I logged in to my Virgin.net account from work and buried under the FAQs is this section,

http://www.virgin.net/helpme/connection/username.html

Broadband customers

Your broadband login is also based on part of your email address, but it includes 'adsl.' between the @ and the virgin.net. For example, if your email address was joe.bloggs@virgin.net, your broadband username would be joe.bloggs@adsl.virgin.net. You only need to use your broadband login when you set up your modem.

So thats it, you have to put "adsl" in your username... quite how I was supposed to know that I really dont know as it doesnt appear ANYWHERE in the "email" Virgin sent me.

This has been driving me nuts for months. My Speedtouch 330 worked fine for a year, then I moved house, and started having problems with the connection dropping. This got so bad that I could barely get online for more than a few seconds before it cutting off.
Virgin said it was BT's fault. After getting BT to come round twice and change the wiring it seemed to be a bit better. But this week its as bad as before!
I'm so glad I've seen this thread. I'll be ditching the 330 asap. btw its dropped just as I'm typing this message!!!!

I have had this trouble for the last year.
Have been in touch with my ISP a dozen times about
this problem they refunded me a whole months payment because at one stage I was off line for a full week and tryed every thing to get back on line.
Things have gone alright for the last month but today it has started again.
You would think that the ISPs in this country would get wise to the fact it is the modems at fault and ditch them till the manufactuers are told.
I am going out to get a Ethernet modem. We will see how that goes fingers crossed.

Im not gonna pretend i know too much about computers and routers but ive had speedtouch for a couple of years now and at the beggining we had problems with it,it took a long time to get up and running but after that it was fine,a few days ago i tried to log onto aol and it gave me the option upgrading my connectivity so ofcourse i clicked ok,big mistake! now my internet is down telling me my PPP is disconnected, ive been intouch with aol and they did'nt seem to know what the problem was (after all they just sit there reading a manual on the whole thing) and they pretty much gave up after five minutes,so i got intouch with speedtouch and they told me that they did'nt have any help for my speedtouch modem because it was three year old!! i thought this was disgusting, seems to me all these people are quick enough to sell you these products but when it comes to helping with problems they just dont want to know.I've had my fill of speedtouch so i've decided to go and look at other routers.

Does it keep disconnecting? The problems may be to do with the line rather than the router. We receive a number of complaints at ukbroadbandworld about people's broadband not working but mostly it's the service that is provided underlying from BT. UK Broadband World

I have the same trouble as everyone else it seems, speedtouch 330 modem (with Orange BB) it was fine for at least 18 months, then up-graded to their 8meg service (from 2meg service) about 2 months ago and then it started this "dropping out" business, with either "no dial detected" or "error 0734". There appears to be no pattern sometimes I can go for 3 or 4 hrs without trouble and other times it can be 3 or 4 minutes!! It is so frustrating, and by reading these messages there does not appear to be an answer, some think it is their ISP provider, some the BT line and some the Speedtouch 330. Anyone got a definitive answer yet?

I had this problem with my old laptop. When it finally gave up and I got a nice new Dell I thought that would be the end of all my problems...but NO... same thing on the new one. It must be the modem or the bt line. Ray
